“Anything goes when it comes to (s)hoes…”


In response to Chris Ofili's painting ‘Virgin Mary’ 1996, the graffiti artist INSA made a pair of stiletto platform heels. His work was to be displayed alongside Ofili’s work in an exhibition at the Tate Briatin. INSA chose to high heels as he is known for his shoes and thought they would be a suitable surface to work on. INSA used to be a graffiti artist who looks at the objectification of women, which is included in the fashion industry. Taking inspiration from one of Ofili’s works INSA named this piece ‘Anything comes when it comes to (s)hoes…’. I like how he has taken Ofili’s process of using elephant dung in his work by using the same as the base of the shoes, so even though they should be disgusting they still look like a desirable pair of heels, puts an ironic edge on the fashion industry.
